Day Master meaning: the 10 types

In Korean saju (Four Pillars), your Day Master (일간 / 日干) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — the elemental “self” that the rest of the chart relates to. There are exactly ten: Yin and Yang versions of the Five Elements. Western astrology’s Sun sign is a cousin idea (core identity), but Day Master language is elemental and calendrical, not planetary.

The ten Day Masters

  1. Yang Wood (갑 / 甲)

Tall tree energy — upright, pioneering, protective of its forest. Grows toward a clear direction.

  2. Yin Wood (을 / 乙)

Vine or flower energy — flexible, aesthetic, persistent. Finds light by bending, not breaking.

  3. Yang Fire (병 / 丙)

Sun at noon — radiant, generous, impossible to ignore. Warms rooms; needs rest so it doesn’t burn out.

  4. Yin Fire (정 / 丁)

Candle or hearth — intimate light, insight, craft. Illuminates one person deeply.

  5. Yang Earth (무 / 戊)

Mountain or field — stable, trustworthy, slow to move and hard to shake once committed.

  6. Yin Earth (기 / 己)

Garden soil — nurturing, receptive, fertile. Holds others; needs boundaries so it isn’t depleted.

  7. Yang Metal (경 / 庚)

Raw ore or axe — decisive, principled, cutting through noise. High standards, low fluff.

  8. Yin Metal (신 / 辛)

Jewelry or needle — refined, precise, tasteful. Notices quality others gloss over.

  9. Yang Water (임 / 壬)

Ocean or river — deep, ambitious, resourceful. Moves with powerful currents.

  10. Yin Water (계 / 癸)

Rain or mist — sensitive, imaginative, strategic. Soft on the surface, surprising depth.

How to use this (without doomscrolling)

Day Master descriptions are tendencies, not prison sentences. Classic practice also weighs season (Month Branch), supporting elements, and “useful gods” — so two Yang Fire people can live very different charts. Treat your Day Master as a useful nickname for your elemental style, then read the full pillar set for context.
